Top Ten Songs For Having a Baby: Adventures of Hattie Bowles

By Coy Bowles

1.    “Push It” – Salt-N-Pepa

It actually was played in the delivery room. It's so obvious that it can't be messed with.

2.    “Sweet Pea” - Amos Lee

My wife is a giant Amos Lee fan, so it was a must. Plus, it's just a nice easygoing sweet song about a lil’ Sweet Pea.

3.    “Snake Eyes” - Wood Brothers

Not sure the words have anything to do with what we were feeling while giving birth, but the groove of the guitar, bass, and drums was perfect for pushing. Haha.

4.    “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” – Billy Medley, Jennifer Warnes

I inherently sing this song to my wife trying to be funny and romantic at the same time, which hardly ever works by the way, but I remember when she first started having contractions I started singing this and she said serious as hell, "Don't sing that again." Correct response was, “Yes ma’am.” She's a sweetheart and never really says stuff like that so I took her advice.

5.    “In Bloom” - Nirvana

I thought about playing this song while in the delivery room. I didn't, but I thought about it. And the reason why is because the first lyrics say, "One baby to another says I'm lucky to meet you." I'm weird. I know it, but it would have been cool - I'm telling you.

6.    “Oh Yeah” – Yello

Theme to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. At one point we had been stuck in 5:00 Atlanta traffic for about 45 minutes and she looked at me and said, “I kind need you to get me to get the hospital now.” I then put the pedal to the metal and started riding in turning lanes and the whole time I was hearing chic chic chic ka de gah. Bah Bah.

7.    “Alive” - Sia

My wife and I are both big fans of Sia. I'm a sucker for great pop music. She has a great voice, the music is always interesting, her lyrics are emotional, and the melodies are always super catchy. This song was actually played in the room as Kylie was in labor. Kylie’s choice in between contractions.

8.    “Stay A Little Longer” - Brothers Osborne

I thought it would be funny to play this right before my wife started having contractions. I was joking with her that the baby was going to come late and she was going to have another week of all these uncomfortable feelings. I started singing this song. She kind of thought it was funny.

9.    “Feels Like The First Time” - Foreigner

This song seems super appropriate for having your first kid.

10. "Times Like These”- Foo Fighters

I wanted to have a song about time in this playlist. Hattie Bowles was born on her due date, so I thought it would be cool to have a song about being punctual. I Googled songs about being punctual and “Times Like These” by Foo Fighters was one that came up about the top ten songs about time. I do love the Foo Fighters. I did send Dave a picture of the baby after she was born. He said, “Congrats dude,” and we chatted for a second and his final words of wisdom were, "Coffee. Lots and lots of coffee."
