Day One - Southern Ground Music & Food Festival Charleston 2013
Third time's a charm, right? Southern Ground Music & Food Festival in Charleston began its third year of tradition with a Daniel Island food and music takeover!Despite the sun playing hide-and-seek over the festival grounds, the air was crisp and the aroma of tangy Home Team BBQ and sweet chocolate & peanut butter pudding from Southern Ground's Chef Rusty Hamlin Southern Ground Grub Concessions (aka Cookie) filled the air as the gates opened at noon on Saturday.
Immediately, Blackbaud Stadium was engulfed with fans as they staked out spots for prime seating near the stages, lounged on the bleachers or filled their stomachs with good eats in the the Southern Ground Grub Food Court. Our Capital One Ferris Wheel was a staple to the Charleston Festival atmosphere. We hope you took a FREE spin!Southern Ground Artists quickly claimed residency on the Landshark Lager Stage as they kicked off Day 1! Brothers Road, AJ Ghent Band, Coy Bowles & The Fellowship, with a cameo appearance by John Driskell Hopkins who later joined the stage with his band Balsam Range, and to close out the musical talent on Landshark, The Wood Brothers!Between our vibrant and crowd-engaging performers on Landshark Stage, our Capital One Stage was on fire all day! Holly Williams greeted the Blackbaud Stadium lawn with her attention-grabbing set that drew the crowd in closer with her rootsy lyrics and vibe. Dawes graced the stage and the concert elbows could be seen from everywhere. Following Dawes, the high-energy that came from Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Fitz & The Tantrums sets had the fans dancing as fast as a tambourine. Frank Olivier had the crowd in bouts of laughter while the Capital One Stage prepped for your festival hosts, Zac Brown Band.Then... the lights dimmed, short familiar musical sounds filled Blackbaud Stadium and the crowd roared in cheers! Zac Brown Band's impressive intro piece to the encore made Southern Ground Music & Food Festival come alive! Special sit-ins included a very spirited Clare Bowen from ABC's hit show Nashville and a smooth-musical collaboration with John Bell of Widespread Panic. Ready for more? Day 2 has just begun!
